Electronic mail, is the fastest written communication over the net. No envelopes, long addresses, postage etc. At the click of a button, you can send a written message to a receiver at an e-mail address such as abc@pugmarks.com. There are numerous free service providers for this service. |
What is a POP?
POP stands for Post Office Protocol. You can think of the POP as a physical mailbox. E-mail that is sent to a POP is stored at that POP and will sit there until you're ready to download it with your e-mail software (Netscape, Pegasus, AOL, Eudora, etc.) Each server comes with one default POP account. The default POP account is your username. The e-mail address used to send mail to this default POP would be username@domainname.com.
What is an Alias?
An Alias is simply a forwarding address. Mail sent to the alias you create is immediately forwarded to the POP of your choice or can even be sent to another alias. Aliases can be any "name" you want with your domain name. For example: anyname@yourdomain.com. Your e-mail alias(es) can forward to any of your existing e-mail accounts. Using aliases, you can have anynameyouchoose@mycompany.com forward to mycomp@mycompany.com.
So by checking only one account, you can get all the mail sent to aliases sales@mycompany.com, johndoe@mycompany.com, etc. You can also forward to an existing alias, to additional POP Accounts you set up, or even to your e-mail address provided to you by your Internet Service Provider (ISP.)
