Thakshak
Starring: Ajay Devgan, Tabu
Director: Govind Nihalani

With the release of Thakshak Govind Nihalani finally joins the ranks of the so-called commercial film makers. Though 'Ard Satya' and 'Aakrosh' were also movies which drew a lot of appreciation from the masses, it is Thakshak which brings Nihalani closer to the commercial stream.

Nihalani has produced a grim action thriller based on the nexus between the Mafia in construction business and politics. It is a story about gangsters, the criminal psyche and their psychological motivations for violence. Ajay Devgan as Ishaan and Rahul Bose as Sunny embody this angst-driven set.

Sunny & Ishaan both belong to big business houses. Sunny is reckless & ruthless in his determination to grab prime property for high-rise structures. Even to the extent of brutally exterminating a family which refuses to sell their house. Ishaan is his close confidante and partner in crime. Though disturbed at times by the cold-blooded murders & mayhem, he is equally to blame. Ishaan hurtles along on this path of mindless violence till he meets Suman (Tabu). Suman is able to spot the goodness in Ishaan and though scared of the violence erupting around her on the streets of Mumbai, she still believes that she'll be able to reform Ishaan. Ishaan too is shaken to the core after taking part in a massacre which has only one survivor. A young girl who's paralyzed for life. Suddenly he's ready to give it all up and the rift between the two former friends widens.

Ajay Devgan has come up with one of his finest performance and Thakshak is definitely going to put him in a new league altogether. But the surprise package is Rahul Bose who plays to perfection a reckless gangster with a very mean streak and suave good looks. His cool exterior masking the violence within. What a relief to be finally able to move away from Hindi screen's larger-than-life villains! Tabu has done well in her short appearance. A.R Rahman's music and the choreography are excellent.

It remains to be seen whether the masses will give their whole-hearted support to Nihalani for moving away from arty stuff into the masala mix - though definitely folks, it's 'masala' with a difference!
