What do country bumpkins wanting to make their fortune have in common? - they all move to the big bad city. And this is what we have Govinda do in Pardesi Babu. Kicked out of his house by his stepmother, Raju pardesi (Govinda) moves from Kanpur to mumbai, his only baggage, his conscience and the solid gold of his heart - something that is again common to the country bumpkins - as demonstrated by the likes of Raj Kapoor in the countless portrayals of the original tramp. This wet behind the ears village yokel is taken by his city slick village friend, Happy Singh (Satish Kaushik) to a chawl ruled over by a landlady mai (Shashikala) who directs him to live like a brahmachari . This poses no problems for our rosy-cheeked cherub, until he finds Chinni ( Shilpa Shetty) asleep in his cot. Her story of of running away from the bridegroom she didn't want to make her husband appeals to his chivalrous instincts - initially. Its only later that she starts appealing to his hormones. But then Raju discovers that he'll need to pay 10 million to Chinni's father if he wants to satisfy the said hormones. He goes into tea production in Darjeeling with the one million he finds in the railway station. He makes the 10 million but then finds the initial money had actually been the property of Karuna's (Raveena tandon) father, who she had lost it at a Mumbai railway station when he'd gone to the city to fix a bridegroom for his daughter. Karuna is incidentally Raju's inept servant who, in between breaking crockery, is now breaking her heart over him. You better see the movie to find out who the Pardesi Babu opts for in the end. The second half of the movie does tend to get mushy and moony, but with Govinda around, the laughs are not far behind. Satish Kaushik does his usual class act. The girls are an excellent foil. All in all, the movie is a fun way to while a couple of hours. . |
