Khoobsurat
Starring: Sanjay Dutt, Urmila Matondkar
Director: Sanjay Chhel

Sanjay Dutt's worked hard on his past 2-3 ventures and the effort shows. His rugged good looks along with his improved performance should keep his fans coming in. Director Sanjay Chhel has even got him to sing a number (Ai Shivani...) A little rhyming ditty which though climbing the charts doesn't do much to enhance Sunju's image. The story is about an orphan, (Sanjay Dutt) with a heart of gold who intrudes into a family, impersonating as a distant relative and starts living with them.

All this with an eye on the familiy's money. No he isn't really a bad guy its just that he has to return a large sum of money to a gangster (Paresh Rawal) within a month & hence this desperate measure.

The host family has Anjan Shrivastava and Farida Jalal as the Dadaji and Dadiji, with their three sons - Om Puri, Ashok Saraf and Late Jatin Kanakia. The two bahus are Himani Shivpuri and Supriya Sabnis and their three kids complete this large happy family.

One of the grandchildren is Urmila, a simple innocent girl (Om Puri's daughter) whose mother died in child birth. Rest of the film is about how Sanjay transforms plain Jane Urmila into a glam doll. There is an attempt at genuine good humour and lots of songs too.

Director Sanjay Chhel, though a hit script writer (Credits include scripts of 'Yes Boss' & 'Rangeela') has failed with the script in his own debut directorial venture. Which is really sad because Khoobsurat is an attempt at a clean, family entertainer but the cliched storyline lets it down badly. Sanjay Dutt is good in parts, while Urmila doesn't really have much to do.
