Kareeb
Starring: Bobby Deol and Neha
Director: Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Vidhu Vinod Chopra gave us Khamoshi, Parinda, 1942 - A Love Story. In short, he gave us some of the finest pieces of innovative Indian cinema that managed to carve a comfortable niche for itself on the no man's land that lay between the great divide of art and mainstream. And now he has given us Kareeb...

Like his earlier movies, Kareeb too has the theme of first love woven inextricably in the trials and tribulations that constitute life. It is the story of a habitual trickster Birju (played by Bobby Deol) who falls in love for the innocent freshness of Neha, who has made an impressive debut in a totally deglamorised role. Quite fittingly the backdrop to the unfolding love story is the sylvan surroundings of a picturesque hill town.

Adding body to the theme, are the other facets of love - the love between a mother and a daughter, the love between friends, the love of a collector for his memorabilia. And then, there is the music - plaintive melodies that speak of anguish and love.

Its a movie that doesn't have too many dark undertones. It lets the viewer enjoy, smile and maybe shed a few tears - which is basically why we go to the cinema hall, isn't it?
