handigarh will be a

nation's faith in the future," decreed Jawaharlal
Nehru.
The Chandigarh of today has more than
lived up to these words. Named after the
Goddess Chandi, the city was carved out
of thick jungle, which is now home to
over six lakh people. Buildings with
stark, clean lines soar against the
backdrop of the Shivaliks, interspersed
by wide tree-shaded avenues and rolling
parkland. Beautifully designed houses sit
in neat rows organised into
sectors,virtually ensuring that a visitor
never gets lost.
The population is a cosmopolitan mix, but
with none of its aloofness. The
Chandigarhians still have time to
exchange pleasantaries even while on the
move. Bustling, yet calm, modern yet
conservative, the city is a harmonious
blend of extremes. What began as the  creative genius of the
master architect, Le Corbusier, is now
inhabited by a people who appreciate its
planned architecture, are appreciative of
its unpolluted environment and proud to
call it home. Chandigarh is truly the
'City Beautiful', in name as well as in
essence.
